HENRY OGUNJIMI is an award-winning Documentary Filmmaker, Content Director/Producer, Photographer, Videographer and Video Editor. He has a master’s degree in News & Documentaries from New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. His works cover personal, social, and political issues.
In 2019, He completed his first independent film “MARKED”, a documentary about what is left of an ancient cultural practice of tribal marks among the Yoruba people from Nigeria and his personal experience growing up as a little boy with marks on his face.
“MARKED” currently has two Best Documentary awards, one 3rd place, and 10 Official Selection at film festivals across the USA, London, Scotland & Belgium.
Before coming to New York, he Produced content for Nigeria’s number-one private television station, Channels Television Media Group.
Back in 2016, he completed his last official documentary for Channels TV, titled “From Benin City to Italy” which reveals the problem of human trafficking in Nigeria, the risks young men and women take to get to Europe in search of greener pastures, and the realities they encounter when they eventually arrive their destinations abroad.
The project took him from the ancient city of Benin in Nigeria’s south-south region through some parts of the Sahara Desert and eventually to Italy.
The broadcast of this piece generated a lot of reactions and enlightened a great number of people both in Nigeria and the diaspora.
This piece was inspired by his drive to tell the story from an African’s eye because most documentaries on human trafficking had been done by foreign journalists from Europe and America.
In the summer of 2012, He and two colleagues from Channels TV visited the United States to produce a six-part series titled “Community Policing and Law Enforcement in a Free Society: The American Example”. Back home, these series triggered reforms in the Nigerian Police Force and have kept the issue of state/community policing on the front burner of most national security discourse.
Henry is from the southwest of Nigeria but was born and raised in the northwest. He speaks two local languages, Yoruba and Hausa fluently, which has helped him navigate some tough terrains in his line of duty.
His interest in journalism has not prevented him from performing in his callings; Process improvement, agile project management, team building, and coaching.
He joined Channels Television in 2007 as a Script Writer and Quality Control Executive. Over the years, he developed his videography, video-editing, scriptwriting, voiceover, broadcast news, and documentary production skills.
He loves playing football(soccer), ping-pong, and flying aerial imaging drones.
